With its 27,5 km² of surface area, Agulo is the smallest municipality of La Gomera, located between the valleys and municipalities of Hermigua and Vallehermoso in the north of the island. Its municipal district extends around the river basins of Sobreagulo and Las Rosas, in the form of a strip from the SW to the NE, where it limits with the sea in a generally steep coast. Of similar form to the rest of La Gomera, erosion has acted intensely in the territory of Agulo.
The fiesta of Saint Mark the Evangelist is celebrated annually at Agulo on the 24th and 25th of April in honor of the patron saint of the municipality. The fiesta is a popular deep-rooted tradition which goes back almost to the founding times of Agulo. This festival has some characteristics and values that make it unique in the Archipelago, constituting an active and attractive cultural heritage of the first order for the municipality of Agulo and the island of La Gomera.
The origin of the name of Agulo is not exactly known. Some authors are inclined to relate it to the Castilian word ángulo meaning an angle, given the geomorphological configuration of the territory. However, others also allude to the pre-Hispanic origin of the place name, with the meaning of “a place open to the sea and with abundant waters”. In fact, the main native nucleus lies under the foundations of the present village centre, and middens are located at the coast.
The house of painter Jose Aguiar (1895-1976), which will host the first library, museum and centre of artistic productions of Agulo, is almost ready to become a reference point for the tourism and cultural development of this northern town of La Gomera. So says the chairman of the Island Council, Casimiro Curbelo, who welcomes the forthcoming conclusion of the restoration work, pending only of the final details, in which nearly half a million euros have been invested.
San Sebastian de La Gomera is the island's largest and most populous borough with an area of 113 km² and a population of 8.445 inhabitants (2005). This insular capital occupies the old canton of Ipalán in the south-east of La Gomera, the major nuclei being the town of San Sebastián in the north-east and the settlement of Tecina in the south. The rest of the territory is made up of gullies and mountains, where innumerable abandoned farming terraces are still clearly visible.
Agulo is the smallest of the six boroughs on La Gomera with its 1.200 inhabitants and surface area of 27,5 km². The village was founded on the north-eastern coast of the island on September 27th 1607, but remained under the jurisdiction of nearby Hermigua until the year 1739. The process of village foundation was slow but resulted in a concentrated plan of buildings set at the foot of ancient sea cliffs, which now stands out for its architectural and scenic beauty.
With an area of 32 km² Valle Gran Rey is the second smallest borough on La Gomera after Agulo. Located in the south-western sector of the island, it comprises three districts: Valle Gran Rey, Arure and Taguluche. The first is a 500 m deep valley in which many small population nuclei can be found. The inland hamlet of Arure is located in the upper part of the borough at a height of 700 m, about 3 km to the west from Las Hayas which is another rural hamlet of Valle Gran Rey.
The borough of Alajeró represents the south of La Gomera with its 1.954 inhabitants (2005) and surface area of 50 square kilometres. The most important settlements are i) Alajeró town centre, which is the administrative capital of the borough located at about 800 metres above sea level, and ii) Playa de Santiago, which is the demographic and economic capital of the borough located on the southern coast, and stands out for its tourist, commercial and fishing activity.
The borough of Hermigua with its 2.142 inhabitants (2005) occupies an area of approximately 40 square kilometres in the north-eastern sector of La Gomera. The most populous region of the borough is the large Hermigua Valley opening towards the north-east, whereas the surrounding mountainous hamlets are nowadays practically deserted settlements. The Hermigua Valley is conventionally divided into the upper and lower part, and it comprises a number of districts.
The borough of Vallehermoso with an area of 109 km² is the second largest municipality on La Gomera after San Sebastián, and is made up of two municipal districts which extend from the northern face of the island down to the south. This unusual combination derives from the year 1812 when the insular boroughs were created and part of the Parish of Chipude was incorporated into Vallehermoso, which now corresponds to the southward facing flank of the municipality.
